Warning: Emails purporting to be from 'Knighton Legal Services' misusing the name and details of a genuine firm, the name and SRA ID of multiple solicitors

Emails have been sent misusing the name and details of Knighton Legal Services Ltd ( (see details below) and genuine solicitors, in connection with purported trademark applications.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that emails have been sent misusing the name and SRA ID numbers of genuine solicitors (see details below) and a firm of solicitors (see details below).

The emails seen by the SRA purport to be from the 'Trademark Division' of 'Knighton Legal Services' in relation to a conflicting UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) trademark application. The correspondences cite the 'Trade Marks Act 1994' and invite the recipients to respond within '48 hours'.

The emails were sent from 'bella@notice.knightonlegalservices.co.uk', 'eva@notice.knightonlegalservices.co.uk', and 'fiona@notice.knightonlegalservices.co.uk'.

The email signatures misuse the trading name of a genuine firm of solicitors, and the name and SRA ID numbers of genuine solicitors (see below) purporting to hold positions as a 'Registered IP Solicitor'. The signatures also provide the genuine firms registered address (see details below), a bogus logo 'Knighton Legal Services' and includes the telephone number '+441922905346', and bogus website 'knightonlegalservices.co.uk'.

Any business or transaction through the email addresses, telephone number or website are not undertaken by any individual or firm authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Knighton Legal Services Ltd (trading as Knighton Legal Services) (SRA ID 8014126). The genuine firms registered address is 229 Darlaston Road, Wednesbury, WS10 7TD. The telephone number is 0330 043 5163 and the genuine firm does not have a website.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Bella Ramsay who is not employed at the genuine firm Knighton Legal Services Ltd (trading as Knighton Legal Services). The SRA number for the genuine solicitor is 827924.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Fiona Guest who is not employed at the genuine firm Knighton Legal Services Ltd (trading as Knighton Legal Services). The SRA number for the genuine solicitor is 579248.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Eva Marisa McDowall who is not employed at the genuine firm Knighton Legal Services Ltd (trading as Knighton Legal Services). The SRA number for the genuine solicitor is 343502 and it is believed that they are not linked to the correspondence referred to above.

The genuine firm and the genuine solicitors have confirmed they have no connection to the correspondence, email addresses, website and telephone number referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
