Warning: WhatsApp messages from 'Amal Al Rashid' misusing the name of Al-Amin Law Ltd

WhatsApp messages have been sent from an account in the name of 'Amal Al Rashid' misusing the name of Al-Amin Law Ltd in relation to the recovery of funds.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that WhatsApp messages have been sent to a member of the public by 'Amal Al Rashid' misusing the name of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below).

The messages were sent from the WhatsApp numbers '+ 44 7537 170460' and '+44 20 7808 8673'. They included images of a passport in the name of 'Amal Al Rashid' and an identification card bearing the name of 'Al Rashid Amal' who was said to be a lawyer. The messages also included a link to Companies House for the genuine firm of solicitors (see below).

The SRA does not authorise or regulate an individual named 'Amal Al Rashid' or 'Al Rashid Amal'.

Any business or transaction through the above telephone numbers is not undertaken by any individual or firm of solicitors authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Al-Amin Law Ltd (SRA number 8014983).

The genuine Al-Amin Law Ltd has confirmed that they do not have any connection to any of the details referred to in the above alert and they have no employee by the name 'Amal Al Rashid' or 'Al Rashid Amal'.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
