Warning: Emails and website claiming to be for 'Vertex Law LLP' and 'Vertex Legal' and misusing the details of a genuine solicitor

A website at 'vertexlegal.co' is operating, falsely claiming to be for a law firm called 'Vertex Law LLP'/'Vertex Legal'. Emails have also been sent falsely claiming to be from Alexander Wright.

What is the scam?

Emails have been sent to a web hosting company falsely claiming to be from a genuine solicitor and misusing the name and SRA ID of that genuine solicitor (see genuine details below). The emails falsely claim that 'Vertex Law LLP'/'Vertex Legal' represents a client and requests that the web host company removes allegedly defamatory content from a domain within its infrastructure. The emails were sent from 'alexander@vertex.co'.

A website at 'vertexlegal.co' is also operating and falsely claiming to be for 'Vertex Law LLP'/'Vertex Legal'. The website provides telephone numbers of +447848879596, +44 20 7123 4568, and an email address of info@vertexlegal-co-632575.hostingersite.com. It also provides an address of 25 Chancery Lane, London, WC2A 1LG.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a genuine firm of solicitors called 'Vertex Law LLP' or 'Vertex Legal'.

Any business or transaction through the contact details above is not undertaken by an individual or firm of solicitors authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Alexander Wright who is a senior associate at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer LLP.

The genuine solicitor has confirmed that he has no connection to the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
